I am still working on my collages, but I got a bit distracted with this one as I was going through some old files.
This photograph has great resonance for me, as it was the first day that we went up to Dartmoor shortly after moving to Devon.
The air was clear and full of frost, and I was so happy to be there. Something about that light was strange, picture-book almost.
(A little change from the rain that we have here at the moment, we are surrounded by water and it doesn’t look to be stopping!)

Fascinating, Cath! What do the geologists say about the origin of the otheroworldly stone outcroppings?
Thanks Gary – it’s called Haytor, and is one of many over the area – this is a bit of an over photographed place really and a major tourist attraction but I still love it up there when there’s not too many people! It’s an enormous chunk of exposed granite, apparently set in place around 280 million years ago, and gradually weathered into these forms – there’s quite a bit of info on this site – http://www.legendarydartmoor.co.uk/tors_moor.htm .
Yes, this does look like a monumental image. I like it very much.
Thanks Shimon, I’m glad you liked it!
Just lovely. Gorgeous light.
Thanks Emily!
Oh yes, beautifully dreamlike. Marvelous.
Thanks very much Elena!
Magnificent. As Emily said, “gorgeous light.”
Thanks so much John, it was a great day for light!
I love the light, too, but also the way the rocks look like toes.
Haha! Yes, they absolutely look like toes! Thankfully no hairy ones 🙂
Wow! What a beautiful place! 🙂
It is! 🙂
I was thinking, as Richard mentioned, too, that the outcropping does look like toes. Fantastic!
It’s a gorgeous photograph, Cath. The light is magic.
Thanks Karen, hope you’re rested after your break!
A spectacular shot of time and place Cath, the tones are so soft and enveloping. Beautiful!
Thanks Patti! It’s odd how it’s all so hard up there, rock, stone, spiky heather, but there is often such a warmth and softness to it..
It is beautiful, Cath. I especially love those purples in the grasses.
Thanks Alison! It’s so often grey but those colours just lift it out!
Haytor was one of my favourite places when we were in Devon (I now live in Aberdeen). I hope you enjoy living in the South West and find it as much of a source of inspiration as I did. Thank you for the follow. Take care. Juliet
Thanks for the kind words Juliet! Your site looks great, with beautiful work. I will take a better visit at the weekend! 🙂
What a fabulous image, captures the place perfectly.
Thanks Lesley, really happy you think so! 🙂
It’s gorgeous! The light and composition, the grandeur and quiet at the same time.
Thankyou! It was an odd fluke in a way, this one, but I’m pleased you can feel something of how it is!
